    The purpose of this position at a medium complexity state historic site is to protect and enhance the natural and cultural resources at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site through management, supervision, and active participation in the various programs of the Division of Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites & Trails. This position is responsible for ensuring that the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site is a clean, safe, and well-run facility providing a pleasant experience for all visitors. These duties achieve the department's objectives by providing enjoyable recreational and educational experiences for visitors, while simultaneously managing our fiscal resources and preserving our natural and cultural resources at the highest possible level.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level

    • SITE MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION - Hire, train, schedule, supervise, discipline, and terminate permanent staff. Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and terminate seasonal staff. Accurately submit all timesheets for self and staff in a timely manner. Perform personnel reviews on permanent staff. Build a culture of safety within all site staff. Oversee site volunteer program and friends group(s) activities. Responsible for training and keeping mandatory certification(s) up to date. Provide complete management of one or more satellite historic sites.
    • BUDGET MANAGEMENT - Review, monitor, and control amount expended from site budget. Stay within a set budget. Plan, project and recommend changes to biennial budgets. Manage Special Revenue Account, equipment, and other budget requests. Manage and oversee the Point of Sale program in conjunction with the site Association group. Oversee management of the site's rentals, fees, and donations, filling out all required paperwork correctly and in a timely manner.
    • CUSTOMER SERVICE - Develop a site-specific customer service training program. Professionally handle customer complaints and promote visitor satisfaction. Oversight of all aspects of concessionaire operations. Act as site liaison to our local partners, federal agencies, and NGOs. Act as the site security and safety coordinator. Respond to security alarms and act as site coordinator for emergency response and search and rescue.  
    • RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Responsible for oversight and management of the site's natural and cultural resources. Adhere to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation for the management of historic grounds and structures, including maintenance repairs and cyclical maintenance. Ensure completion of all curatorial duties, including the management, documentation, and exhibition of the artifacts, photographs, books, and loaned items in the site's collection. Stay current on industry standards related to collections management and archival and curatorial techniques. Manage noxious and invasive species removal program. Oversee the long-term impacts of special events on the site's grounds.
    • PROGRAMMING - Serve as site lead on interpretive and outreach projects, brochures, exhibits, signage, advertising, and special events. Develop, implement, review and adapt exhibits, programming, tours, and marketing to fit the changing needs of our visitors and agency.
    • BUILDING & GROUNDS MAINTENANCE - Responsible for the site's cyclical maintenance program.  Direct capital development. Assess, develop, plan and complete site maintenance projects. Develop seasonal and year-round routine maintenance plans. Coordinate maintenance and repairs with multiple contractors and the division Construction & Engineering section.
    • EQUIPMENT & VEHICLE MANAGEMENT - Acquire, maintain, and dispose of equipment, vehicles, and tools. Maintain equipment and vehicle inventory. Provide staff with safe operation and maintenance procedures training.  
    • OTHER DUTIES - Other duties as assigned. Serve on agency committees as requested.  Respond to alarms and provide emergency responders with timely information.  Attend meetings with elected officials.  



    Preference may be given to applicants with a bachelor's degree in history plus 2 to 4 years of work experience in resource, site, and collections management, and in providing excellent customer service.


    • Knowledge of administrative and financial procedures and techniques.
    • Knowledge of personnel management and supervision, including performance evaluation.
    • Knowledge of park management methods and procedures.
    • Knowledge of government budgeting and accounting procedures.
    • Knowledge of principles of historic site management including conservation and preservation standards for buildings and grounds.
    • Knowledge of building restoration and maintenance practices for historic structures and grounds.
    • Knowledge of exhibit design and construction.
    • Knowledge of best practices for interpretation and educational programming.
    • Knowledge of professional standards for accession, preservation, and exhibition of collections (artifacts, photographs, books, etc.).
    • Knowledge of fee collection procedures and accounting.
    • Knowledge of inter-agency and intra-agency communications.
    • Knowledge of water systems, operation, and facility maintenance.


    Bachelor's Degree (typically in Cultural Resources)


    0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Cultural Resources) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Cultural Resources Specialist


    Education & Experience Substitution:

    4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Cultural Resources) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Cultural Resources Specialist

     Necessary Special Requirements


    • Work will be performed in an office setting and outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • FLSA:  Non-exempt
    • Housing and basic utilities are provided. The house is a single-level modular with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, privacy fenced back yard, 2 car garage, and a deck. There is a $100 rental fee charged monthly.
    • Valid Driver's License required.
    • First Aid/CPR/AED certifications are required within the first year of employment.
    • Appropriate water, wastewater and/or commercial pesticide applicator license may also be required within the first year of employment.
