    Executive Director of Deadwood History, Inc.

    Deadwood History, Inc. (DHI), a non-profit organization in Deadwood, South Dakota, that oversees the operations of the Adams Museum, Historic Adams House, Days of ’76 Museum, Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center, and The Brothel Deadwood.

    SUMMARY OF POSITION:  The Executive Director will oversee all day-to-day operations of DHI.  The ideal candidate will possess a graduate degree in history, museum studies, business management, or a related field with five years of experience in the administration and management of a complex, multi-faceted cultural institution.  The Executive Director must be a creative thinker with strong written and verbal communication skills as well as a team player with the ability to work with the DHI Board, DHI staff, City of Deadwood, community stakeholders, and volunteers.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • 1.       Graduate degree in history, museum studies, business management, or a related field, as determined suitable by the DHI board of directors with five years of experience in the administration and management of a complex, multi-faceted cultural institution
    • 2.       Comprehensive awareness of and experience in all aspects of museum operations
    • 3.       Excellent written and verbal skills
    • 4.       Proven experience and success in grant writing and development
    • 5.       Ability to communicate clearly and represent the institution in public, professional, and media settings
    • 6.       Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with a board of directors and leading staff
    • 7.       Dynamic, forward thinker who is a team player
    • 8.       Experience and/or capability for providing inspiring and visionary leadership in planning strong innovative programs and events
    • 9.       Committed to museum excellence and a deep appreciation for the changing museum field, community engagement, and high quality visitor experiences

     RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • 1.       Oversees and assesses the day-to-day operations of DHI personnel, prioritizes activities,  develops and enforces polices, provides direction, guidance, and training for senior staff, while encouraging a healthy, respectful, and productive work environment
    • 2.       Demonstrates an understanding and respect for all facets of museum operations regarding best practices, including collections care, management, and interpretation
    • 3.       Prepares and manages budget for DHI
    • 4.       Hires, supervises, and evaluates senior staff
    • 5.       Oversees numerous departments, including: collections management and interpretation; marketing and public relations strategies; special event planning; educational programming; and exhibit planning, interpretation, and development
    • 6.       Researches, develops, and writes for grant-funded projects, publications, exhibits, and any other organizational needs
    • 7.       Provides leadership in meeting the strategic plan goals and objectives
    • 8.       Prepares and presents monthly and quarterly reports to the boards of DHI, Adams Museum & House, and Days of  ’76 Museum
    • 9.       Acts as DHI’s spokesperson by serving on select boards and giving public presentations
    • 10.   Serves as DHI liaison with the City of Deadwood and Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission
    • 11.   Develops collaborations and partnerships to increase awareness and appreciation for the history of Deadwood and the Black Hills

    SALARY AND BENEFITS:

    Compensation:  Depends on experience ($70-$79k)
