    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Elk City Museum Complex is seeking a passionate and experienced Museum Curator to join its team. The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation for history, excellent organizational skills, and a proven track record in the museum field. The curator will be responsible for managing the museum's collections, developing and designing exhibits, conducting research, and engaging with the public through educational programs and outreach initiatives.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Reports to the City Manager.

    Co-supervises museum staff, interns and docents alongside the Museum Director.

    Attends City Supervisor meetings weekly, and Museum Board meetings monthly.

    Maintains liaison with the City of Elk City and Museum Board and works closely with the Western Oklahoma Historical Society.

    Routinely assesses the different buildings around the museum complex, reporting any maintenance concerns or pest infestations to the City.

    Conducts independent historical research into various topics mostly related to Route 66, and late 19th and 20th century western Oklahoma.

    Applies preventative care and proper handling techniques to help ensure longevity of historical artifacts.

    Identifies and recommends to the Museum Board, historical artifacts and materials offered up for donation to the Elk City Museum Complex for use in exhibits and educational programs.

    Utilizes Past Perfect collections database and cataloging software to create and maintain records on museum and archival collections.

    To this end gains working knowledge of the two or more collections management systems put in place by different curators over the years and carefully finds solutions to the problems this has created.

    Develops history exhibits designed to guide the public through the museums while providing concise but properly researched historical narratives.

    Utilizes current technology to implement accessibility features and different learning styles to old and new exhibits.

    Develops and leads educational programs and outreach initiatives involving the local community.

    Attends Oklahoma Museums Association (OMA) conferences, webinars and workshops to stay current on museum practices and maintain the Elk City Museum Complex’s important relationship with the organization.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Master's degree in History, Museum Studies, or a related field.

    Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a museum.

    Strong knowledge of historical research methods.

    Demonstrated experience in curating history exhibits.

    Demonstrated excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills.

    Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Established network within the museum and/or academic communities.

    Experience with museum boards and staff management.

    Strong knowledge of artifact preservation techniques.

    Demonstrated knowledge of collections cataloging and database software.
