    The Department of History at the University of Nebraska at Kearney invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to contribute to the university’s growing undergraduate and graduate programs in public history. The faculty member will join a vibrant department that values public scholarship and community engagement in consideration for promotion and tenure. They will be expected to contribute towards the department’s existing relationships with local, state, and regional public history organizations, and to collaborate with faculty colleagues and community partners on public projects.

    The faculty member will teach courses in the undergraduate public history minor and online MA in Public History, as well as graduate and undergraduate courses in their area(s) of topical specialization. They will also mentor undergraduate and graduate research, engage in scholarly activity, develop new public history initiatives, and provide service to the department, university, community, and profession.

    About the Department and University
    The UNK Department of History has 12 full-time faculty. Undergraduate students can major in history or history/social studies education, as well as earn minors in history, Nebraska studies, and/or public history. The department has more than a decade of experience in online education and is one of the largest online history graduate programs in the United States, offering MA degrees in History and Public History. The public history programs work closely with community and statewide partners, including the Buffalo County Historical Society, the G.W. Frank Museum, the Museum of Nebraska Art, Nebraska State Historical Society, and the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission.

    Located in central Nebraska, the University of Nebraska at Kearney is a regional public university of approximately 6,000 students. UNK is consistently rated among the top ten regional public universities in the Midwest by US News and World Report.

    Required Qualifications
    PhD in History, Public History, Museum Studies, American Studies, or related discipline

    Preferred Qualifications
    Complementary specializations in public history, which may include local history, digital history, material culture, historic preservation, museums studies, or a related discipline.

    A record of public and/or digital scholarship and service in collaboration with diverse community stakeholders.

    Training and experience in online teaching.

    Ability to supervise undergraduate and graduate student internships.

    Experience in fundraising and grant writing.

    Publications in area(s) of specialization.


    Salary range is $57,000-62,000
