Description

The Museum Preparator will perform exhibit and gallery installations, deinstallations and upkeep, general collections stewardship, and preparation of objects for display; manage computer/server-based media interactives; perform related work.
Example of Duties
Installation and Maintenance of Exhibit Spaces
- Designs and builds exhibits to suit specific displays.
- Constructs and paints display cabinets and exhibit structures for use in the museum
- Installs and deinstalls temporary and traveling exhibitions.
- Selects materials, tools, and equipment to be used in the construction of displays.
- Maintains exhibit spaces within museum buildings.
- Prepares, hangs, and installs historical objects and art for display by cleaning, repairing, and restoring.
- Prepares custom mounts for display for artifacts.
- Preserves longevity of items by applying protective material.
- Repairs and replaces interactive components and exhibit furniture.
Digital Interactives and Associated AV Devices
- Maintains existing permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibitions, including 46 interactive/multimedia-based components which require troubleshooting and ongoing scheduled preventative maintenance.
- Responsible for performing the ongoing updates, troubleshooting, and maintenance of permanent exhibits control system including working with appropriate IT staff and vendors.
- Accountable for facilitating software and hardware updates as recommended by contracted companies to ensure ongoing functionality of interactives.
- Tracks and maintain projectors, monitors, computers, and other AV equipment.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for contracted companies.
Collections Stewardship
- Works with museum’s permanent collection of historic artifacts, including handling, transporting, packing/unpacking, and examining of physical stability.
- Builds and prepares custom crates, cribbing, and other solutions for long-term storage of artifacts.
- Selects appropriate materials for the preservation of artifacts.
- Performs basic record keeping in a database system.
- Maintains proper inventory of exhibit and hand tools and power equipment, orders supplies, and equipment as needed.
- Operates of woodworking, metalworking, and painting equipment.
- Contributes to the staffing and security of the Storage warehouse, with other Collections & Exhibitions team members.
Minimum Qualifications
Some knowledge of: media-based interactives; AV equipment including projectors, monitors and computers; cabinet or exhibit construction and installation including finish carpentry.
Good knowledge of: materials used for construction of cabinets, exhibits, or displays, and restoration methods of exhibits and artifacts.
Experience: cleaning, repairing, painting, and refinishing surfaces using various power tools, welders, grinders, and painting equipment; performing minor building and site maintenance on electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Incumbents may be required to work in confined spaces, lift and carry items weighing approximately 90 pounds, and perform bending, stooping, shoveling, and climbing ladders
Considerable knowledge of curatorial practices in the handling and display of art and artifacts.
