Associate Collections Manager, History Colorado

    DESCRIPTION OF JOB

    History Colorado’s artifacts and original documentary materials are central to our educational and interpretive mission. The collection currently comprises approximately 225,000 artifacts, 1,000,000+ photographs, and 9,000+ linear feet of textual and archival materials. History Colorado's collection includes a wide array of artifacts reflecting more than 12,000 years of human presence in Colorado and the region. Collections include such diverse objects as furniture, gold coins, mining equipment, paintings, horse-drawn buggies, firearms, prints, toys, textiles, clothing, and the 10th Mountain Division, New Deal, and Mesa Verde collections. This collections management position focuses on the physical care and management of the collection, including aspects of access such as tours and programming. This position is responsible for helping to provide overall direction and focus for collections management activities while still physically working in the collection on a daily basis.

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    • Provide high levels of accountability and collections stewardship for entire collection Work with staff to manage large and small collections projects such as surveys, moves, rehousing, conservation/preservation priorities, inventory, disasters, etc.
    • Work with Collections Manager to create, implement, and uphold policies and procedures. Provide high level of project management.
    • Manage environmental, facility, and pest conditions for storage. Provide high level of collections outreach and programming.
    • Improve collections access with expectation of traveling and working at local facilities once or more weekly.
    • Assist with collections and exhibit projects at community museums throughout the state. Direct and supervise the work of volunteers and interns.
    • Exhibit support as needed.

    Candidate Must Successfully Demonstrate:

    • Proven application of collections management skills and survey and inventory projects. Strong ability to make decisions, be self-directing and work independently, and show motivation.
    • High level of proficiency with collections management databases.
    • Strong storage organization skills, mount-making, and rehousing/survey/inventory projects. Collections management experience with large collections or high volumes of activity at a medium to large institution (or experience that is comparable).
    • Experience in project management, meeting deadlines, and flexible multi-tasking in a fast- paced and sometimes ever-changing environment.
    • Innovative and/or motivated approaches for collections outreach and providing access to collections, especially with workflow.
    • Effective communication and cooperation with other museum staff, especially curatorial staff. Ability to direct collections management tasks or make comparable decisions with or in absence of a supervisor.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & APPEAL RIGHTS:

    • Master’s degree strongly preferred in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Library Science (or related degree) with a minimum of 1 year of practical museum experience OR Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of relevant practical experience
    • Handling, storage, and experience with large collections or high volumes of activity at a medium to large institution (or comparable experience)
    • Experience working with a range of collection types including artifacts, photographs, and archival materials
    • Strong computer skills and proficiency with collections management databases, metadata standards, and cataloging standards common to museums and archives, strong experience with Argus preferred
    • Knowledge of or ability to learn Colorado history and history of the American West Knowledge of museum collection standards and conservation practices including the standard agents of deterioration, their effects on different types of artifacts, and how to best mitigate their effects (theft, fire, water, temperature, relative humidity, pests, light, contaminants, etc.)
    • Ability to certify and use pallet jack, forklift, and other warehouse type equipment

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Sometimes requires lifting heavy objects and working on ladders
    • May require periodic travel by car, van, and truck to storage facilities and museums throughout the state, typically for periods of less than one week in duration
    • May require working weekends or evenings for special projects; work from home options may be available periodically
