    Learning Engagement Coordinator

    Position Overview

    ***This position currently has funding secured for 2 years (24 months) from the start of the appointment. If additional funding cannot be secured beyond the two years, the position will end unless new funding can be secured.***

    The Learning Engagement Coordinator will report to the Mellon Director of Academic Programs and work closely with Public Practice, Curatorial, and Collections colleagues to coordinate learning activities that make use of the Museum’s collections, both on display and in storage. The coordinator will manage the day-to-day operations of the Museum’s new Lee Study Center—a 2000-square-foot open storage and object-based learning facility prominently located within the galleries—and work to develop and facilitate innovative cross-disciplinary engagement opportunities that realize the full potential of this hybrid classroom space. This person will also assist with coordinating the Museum’s two other flexible teaching and learning spaces, the Brosseau Center for Learning and the Goddard Study Center, as well as assist in scheduling. As the learning engagement coordinator becomes familiar with the Museum’s 47,000-object collection, they may also work with instructors to select objects for study in line with their curricular goals. This is a two-year, fixed-duration position generously supported by the Humphreys Charitable Trust and the Office of the Provost.

    Job Description

    Planning and Communication (40%)

    • In consultation with Public Practice and Curatorial colleagues, develops innovative and creative programming, as well as teaching and learning opportunities that showcase how the Lee Study Center can relate to and enrich the curricula of its K-12 and University audiences, including distance-learning opportunities across the state of Kansas.
    • Schedules, coordinates, and oversees all activities in the Lee Study Center, including university and school class visits, research visits, tours, and other public programs.
    • Works with Academic Programs and Education staff to schedule university and K-12 class visits, as well as community group visits, and to identify gallery guides.
    • Greets and orients instructors, students, researchers, and other visitors, and supervises collections study in the Lee Study Center during their visits.
    • Assists with audiovisual and IT equipment (setup & troubleshooting) in the Lee Study Center and Brosseau Learning Center.
    • Maintains communication with Museum docents and attends docent and student guide training meetings as needed.
    Art Handling (30%)
    • Responsible for handling collection objects and facilitating access to objects by students and researchers.
    • Coordinates and assists with the movement, staging, installation, and deinstallation of objects in the Lee Study Center and Brosseau Center for Learning, including for single visits and multi-week case installations.
    • Works closely with Collections and Exhibitions colleagues to make artworks accessible in the Lee Study Center.
     Database Management (20%)
    • Oversees and creates tour records for the Museum’s calendar and database, and updates and maintains database records for all K-12 and University curricular engagement. Further assists in updating object record locations.
    • Records data and prepares reports on class use statistics for the Lee Study Center and in coordination with the Museum’s other classroom spaces, as well as overall gallery visits by University and K-12 classes.
    Other Duties (10%)
    • Participates in staff meetings and scheduled all-staff trainings.
    • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

    Position Requirements

    1. This position may have a hybrid work arrangement. Incumbent may work some portion of hours remotely and on campus based on arrangements with supervisor and the Museum.
    2. Climb stairs and ladders and lift objects up to 30 lbs. with or without assistance.  

    Required Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree in art history, art education, education, or related field AND 1 year of related professional experience. 
    2. Excellent written communication skills, as evidenced by resume and cover letter.
    3. Experience working with diverse populations.  
    4. Prior work experience requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    5. Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite.  
    6. Experience handling museum collection objects, including paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and/or textiles.

    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Experience managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
    2. Experience with art from East Asia, and/or East Asian language ability.
    3. Classroom teaching experience.
    4. Previous work in a museum setting.
    5. Familiarity with MuseumPlus or other proprietary collection management database.
    6. Experience with classroom audiovisual technology and troubleshooting technological issues. 
    7. Experience working in a university setting.
